Ok, I know I'm a big guy but when it rains it pours. Tonight I was out riding, nothing rough at all and I noticed my rear wheel was untrue all of the sudden so I stopped and found a broken spoke, swore at myself, got on and rode home. When I was putting my bike up on the wall I started feeling the spokes for other loose or broken ones. All of the sudden I touch one of the spokes and the spoke and HUB break off. These are Hugi 240 from 01' when I bought my bike. Needless to say I'm a bit angry.

Anyhow, I'm now on the market for a SOLID bullet proof rear wheel hub (and maybe front if needed) that isn't going to destroy my wallet. I'm a big rider and have Mavic X517 Double Wall Alloy Rims if that helps. I also want to upgrade my spokes to a higher guage (I had DT Revolution 15/18G Black Stainless Steel).

Can anyone recommend a setup to me that is good for a Clydesdale? Any help or guidance would be appreciated ...

Let me get this straight. You tested for tension of the remaining hubs and
one spoke and the HUB broke off? can you explain what you meant by
broke off? did one spoke hole on the flange break or somehow is your
hub in one hand and rim in the other? (if so how did that happen?).
15/18 spokes are pretty light for a clydesdale, I'd say a 14/15 is a better
guage (or 2.0/1.8 mm).
If your hub failed I would contact Hugi, even tho its 2 years old it should
Not fail like that.
I checked on the Hugi site and there is no weight limit posted
anywhere that I could find for 240 hubs (and I checked mountain
and road variants.)
They also list a 3 year warranty so you should be covered.

Sorry if I didn't explain it well. Yea, when I touched one of the spokes the hub basically broke where it's attached to that spoke (the flange broke off).

The spokes and tires with stock on my Homegrown Factory, but I will rebuild them stronger. I can't seem to find the website for hugi, can you tell me the URL? Thanks ...

Any ideas on a better hub in the event this isn't covered? Thanks for the help ...

If you are a big guy the best deal (for the money) would be LX or XT hub 36 hole(There are tougher hubs but they are mucho $$), 14/15guage spokes (Straight 14 is stronger but I find the butted spokes offer a little give where the straight spokes break stuff) and the Mavic F519 rim(Similar to the x517 but a little wider and quite a bit stronger). All this handbuilt by someone who knows what they are doing.

I don't want to keep replacing these things so I was looking at spending some $$$ anyhow. As a big riders it's something I have to accept. I've been looking at the Chris King Classic Hubs right now. They have great reviews, 5 yr warranty, and look sweet. I read in another thread that someone recommended them to a fellow Clydesdale as well. I'm also looking at double butted 14/15/14 spokes which after reading my Barnett's they also suggest as well for greater lateral strength with some flex. I'm not sure if I should also replace my hub or not. If it's not damaged do you think I should? I know I can get a stronger set but dang if this isn't setting me back a ton already. I guess it would be stronger overall ... I'll think on that. Any suggestions? The same thread:

Not trying to keep my own thread going but I took the hugi 240 into the LBS yesterday and they were going to attempt to call dt swiss to see if it's still covered. I'm crossing my fingers, if not I'll have to build out a Chris King or something else of that caliber. Just wanted to keep everyone updated.
