I bought that bike at a garage sale last year. Freaky.

I just read this and realized that the thread count would be at least halved if new people actually read and kept this in mind.

I don't recall, but do new users get an email with a version of this, perhaps tweaked to be relevant to all the "serious" sub forums? I hope they do.

Or maybe just say something to the effect of please use the search function before starting a new thread if you need mechanical help - this is the only place where we get annoying repetition that isn't severely flamed.

It would be nice, but sadly no. However, I think it has been having good effect. There doesn't seem to be nearly as many clueless threads as before. But I might just be mellowing with old age. Still, if you can suggest a better way to get the message across, I'd love to hear it.

No change. They are and always have been different pieces.

The "bottom bracket" (BB) is the thing that attaches the crank to the bike. It might or might not include an axle, but always includes bearings. (Nor does it include the frame cross tube - the "hanger tube".)

The "crank" is the axle and and arms assembly. One or both arms might not be detachable.

Does any one wish you where Annette's or Barbara's seat???

Thanks to this thread, being as I'm a bike newbie, I didn't make a spectacle out of myself asking about what's creaking on my bike. I do agree that this should be made a sticky (or just more easily accessible info) for people like me to read as soon as they see/join the site. The bike acronyms were very helpful as well as the link to Sheldon's site as that helped me pinpoint the "creaking" problem I've been having : ) Knowing the standard info kept me from making what is a common mistake on this site.

If you are having a mechanical issue and have not been able to find a solution please follow the suggestions below. When not interacting in-person or in real time it helps cut down on the shotgun approach (try these 5 things) and irrelevant guesses. It's wasteful to get the info piecemeal or to scroll through to see what's been covered. It also shows respect for the people offering their time and expertise.

1. If you aren't familiar with bike terms Google bike parts diagram and refer to whatever image is most helpful to you in order to use terms with which we are familiar. It's critical to do so if you are not native English speaking, as translation programs do a poor job with bicycle terms.
2. What is the make, model, size (as relevant) age, etc. of the item and/or component you are having problems with?
3. Describe the problem in terms of specific symptoms - what you hear, feel or see, rather than conclusions (my brakes are broken). What exactly happens? Include what it looks like, sounds, feel, pattern of sound, etc.
4. When did the problems start or did it come on gradually? If the latter, did you make any changes or remember any significant events just before it started? (In the case of a bicycle things like new part, repair, an accident, the bike falling over, being transported, friend borrowed the bike, etc.)
5. Is the problem constant or intermittent (comes and goes)?
6. Under what conditions does it occur? (Such things as gear combination*, pedal pressure, in/out of saddle, hard braking, etc.) *In the case of multispeed bike gear problems DO NOT use 1st, 3rd gear, low/high, etc. Rather use "smallest rear cog with all chainwheels," "3rd smallest rear cog with small chainwheel".
7. What sources have you checked for info, what have you tried to fix the problem, what have you eliminated (and how)? If it is a new bike have you returned it to the shop? If no why not; if yes what was the result?
