ISO Preciray wheel truing stand
 

I'm looking to purchase a used Preciray wheel truing stand. Many years ago, I built hundreds of wheels on Preciray stands at bike shops in Ravenna, Ohio and Minneapolis, MN, and I fell in love with the Preciray. So, think of me as an old guy looking for a long lost love. Thanks!

Yup, $1500 is what I figured as the price of a new Preciray. That's why I'm looking for a used one. I'll pay up to $800 for a used one in good condition.

Re my investments, I do not discuss such personal matters on public forums only to say that I'm still working and a few years away from retirement.

I don't have one, nor do I see the draw in comparison to something like a TS-3 with indicators. However, since I couldn't get your picture to work, here is a better picture for those who are curious. Not my pic so I'm going to link it rather than post it:

Not even close. I've built hundreds of wheels on each, prolly >1000 on Precirays. A Preciray allows the wheel to be trued with a single pass, and the dishing gauge was brilliant -- hard to explain the superiority of the Preciray in writing. Each authorized Raleigh dealer in the late 1970's and early 1980's got a Preciray as part of Raleigh's initial dealer package. But it seems that people got spooked by it -- I was the only guy who figured out the Preciray in two different shops hundreds of miles apart, so I know there's some out there collecting dust.

It looks to me as if the Preciray only has an indicator on one side of the rim. Given that, how do you properly dish without flipping the wheel around once (which you can do with a dial indicator)? I'm not saying you're wrong, just that I need a bit more explanation before it's going to make sense in my head. I do like the look of the rollers on the rim and the axle clamps though.

Looking at that thing, and seeing what price you're offering, you might be able to get a machine shop to clone one from the picture.

Hub width is indicated when the wheel is placed into the jig. A sliding ruler flips up to measure the rim width, and then slides back to a zero right position. 1/2 hub width - 1/2 rim width = right side of rim position. Set side-to-side indicator accordingly. Results in a perfectly dished wheel with no dishing tool or flip comparison required. Setting concentricity indicator is more of an art. With some practice, one pass yields the most true and round wheel imaginable. It's truly remarkable, but it seems that few shop monkeys bother to figure it out -- and that's why I am certain that there are Precirays out there collecting dust.

I machined my current jig (I machined all my framebuilding jigs and fixtures), and, if I don't find a Preciray, I might beef it up. But it would not be an easy project, and it won't perform like a Preciray because widely available dial indicators don't cut it compared to Preciray's proprietary indicators.

Drat, they already have all the electronic truness logging sensors that I was planning to implement.
The link with the fuzzy english looked like a pretty but otherwise poorly functioning piece because it won't self center. On the other hand, the page with several pictures on it had some cool looking stuff.

Edit: I just looked at the prices on the second page, nearly 1000 euros for the top model?

i'll stick with my old front fork.

I have a Preciray stand I'm interested in selling... It is pretty much in new condition with the exception of some minor surface oxidation on the unpainted steel parts.
