shifting woes

I just picked up a specialized hardrock sport and for the life of me can't figure out the shifting problem.
I think the previous owner replaced either the RD or the rear cassette with something not compatable with each other. The shifters are Deore, the RD is a Sram SX4. It shifts fine on the 6 biggest rings but wont travel enough to shift onto the 2 small rings. If I adjust it to shift onto the small rings it wont shift to the 2 larger rings.
When shifting from the largest gear it drops one sprocket for one click of the shifter for the first couple gears, then it takes two clicks of the shifter to make it go to the next lowest gear.
I'm lost when it comes to all these sprockets, what should I be looking for?

It's your derailleur.

The SRAM SX4 rear derailleur needs a different cable pull ratio than your Shimano shifters provide so you need to replace either the derailleur or the shifter. Derailleurs are cheaper so that's the one that I would change. Since you have a Deore shifter I'd go for the matching derailleur.
