How do roadbike chain rings get bent?

I can see a MTB chainring getting bent by hitting a rock or something but that generally doesn't happen to a road bike. Yet my big ring is slightly tweaked, enough to wobble 3-4mm and make trimming the front derailleur a pain. It's a quality ring as far as I can tell - a CNC machined Bianchi pantographed ring that came on their oem carbon fiber crank that was used with the Chorus equipped bikes in the early 2000's. I was able to get it back to within 1-2mm straightness using a cresent wrench as I've seen recomended so it's OK for now but I'm curious as to what causes the rings to get bent in the first place. I'm a little concerned with this one because I wouldn't have any idea where to get a replacement and I tried popping on a Campy ring and it wouldn't quite fit although they were both 135mm bcd. I would have had to massage the Campy ring with a little sand paper or something to get it to go on smoothly.

Are you positive the crankarm or bottom bracket are not bent? Do both chainrings appear to wobble at the same time?

All true.

I've seen quite a few chainrings bent lately, though mostly on lower-end MTBs, specifically those with 4 chainring bolts. My theory is that there is too much span between bolts to properly support the ring, especially when novice cyclists shift under power and crosschained. The extreme angles put a lot of sideways pressure on relatively soft ring material. If you have massive guads, you're just asking for it.

Too large of a chainring mounted on a small BCD crank combined with massive quads.
