best front mech for a compact double?

New build. 9-speed 11-34 with Shimano XT M772 in back. Chainrings are 46-30. (50.4 BCD, if anyone cares). What front derailleur do you recommend?

The kind of shifters matter, since "mountain" & "road" front shifters have different pull ratio's.

several companies want you to buy theirs. get the one that goes with the brand of shifters, by that company.

As far as new parts are concerned, something like the Shimano CX70 would be a nice fit, as it's shaped for the smaller rings used in cyclocross. Beyond that, most "road" FDs ought to do the job if you can get them low enough.

Now that I think about it, I bet a lot of the older MTB FDs meant for triples with a ~48T big ring would work nicely as well. You have lots of options, especially if you're running friction in the front.

My straggler came with Shimano CX70 & chainrings are 36-48 and they work like a charm with my current Tiagra 4600 shift/brake levers.

I've got the same crank and the Shimano cycle cross cx70 FD shifts beautifully with my Ultegra 10 shifters

Apologies for jumping in on this thread: I have 105 5700 components on my bike, running a 50/34 compact. Would a CX front DR give better shifting than a standard 5700 10 speed FD? Many thanks.

The 5700 was designed to handle 50/34 cranks. If the shifting is fine, I wouldn't make the switch.
