Hub Loosens While Riding

Hello,

I am riding an old schwinn world tourist with the front freewheel system (meaning the back cogs are fixed). I got a new steel wheel from Sta Tru wheels. I have trued the wheel and the wheel is in true and i set it in the frame and it doesn't hit the brakes. But when i begin riding the hub seems to loosen up and then i start hitting the brakes. I'v tightened the hubs but the problem still persists.

Sounds like your hub bearings are out of adjustment, if you don't know how to properly adjust them you might want to check out the articles at sheldonbrown.com or parktool.com. You're going to need a set of metric open ended wrenches or a very good quality adjustable, plus some very thin metric wrenches called cone wrenches that a bike shop can sell you and maybe even show you how to use.

Is the axle secure in the frame dropouts? With solid axle hubs you really need massive track nuts with a built-in serrated washer and tighten them with a box rather than a cresent wrench (ie a wrench that goes all around the nut.

This is a pretty ambiguous description. What does "tightened" the hubs mean? You adjusted the cones and you find that you lost the adjustment on the road?

That means you didn't tighten the locknut properly against the cone. But you also say the "hub loosens up and it hits your brakes". It'd have to be really loose to do this. Or did you mean the wheel goes out of true..?

I cranked down on the bolts that hold it in the frame and that seems to have solved the problem.

Yes, i ment the wheel went out of true, but it had to only do with the hub not the spokes because i trued the wheel.

The locknut and the cone seem to be pretty much stuck together, I guess this i what i get for getting 10 dollar sta-tru wheels
