Loose Ultegra cogs... Damaged alum freehub?

Here's the set-up... Cane Creek Volos wheels, Ultegra 9 speed Cassette. The freehub is hard anodized aluminum. I removed the cassette for cleaning, and when reinstalled, noticed the the freehub seems a little tight... I thought maybe I over-torqued it (no more than I use on my steel freehubs) and backed off a bit. Didn't seem to help the freehub much, if any, and the cogs seem a little loose now (maybe they were before?).

I didn't notice it before, but never really payed attention. I'm accustomed to 3pc (incl 2 loose cogs) mtb cassettes not having any play, but then all of the cogs are attached on them, unlike the Ultegra which has 9 pieces including the loose spacers. Is it possible to get shims for these (.5mm should fix it)?

The cassette cogs need to be tight. If you have any doubt about how tight to make the lockring use a torque wrench and tighten to Manufacturer's spec, should be shown on the lockring. Most 9-speed cassettes need no extra spacer unless the hub is MAVIC, then you need the MAVIC spacer that should have come with the hub.

Well, the loose cog issue has been solved. I pulled it all apart, inspected everything and put it back together, and re-torqued it - cogs are tight now. Not sure what kept them from being tight before, unless maybe the outer cog wasn't seated properly. What initially concerned me about the torque is that my wrench is a bit inconsistent (cheap needle-type), so I call it the "ball-park torque wrench"...

Anyway, the Cane Creek freehub does seem a little stiffer than the Shimano freehubs and various freewheels that I'm accustomed to, but maybe it's the nature of the beast.

Yeah, the first position cog needs to be in the proper alignment with the freehub splines, like the other cogs.
It's easy to get it lined up wrong.
