Crick in my Crank!

Can anyone diagnose this one? When I pedal forward there is a popping and a crick in my crank. This has never happended before. The only thing I can think of that I did wrong was pedal backwards four cycles yesterday while ending my ride. Someone told me to never pedal backwards. It was new to me. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You should be able to pedal backwards without doing any harm, just dont do it when you are changing gear.
There are several potential causes of clicking, but locating the click is never easy, it could be the bottom bracket shell or bearings, the crank mounting system, the pedal bearings. Pedal bearings are the most likely, the easiest the gain access to, and the easiest to fix, so I usually start there.
If you are a mechanical newbie, then you are probably better off taking your bike to a decent local bike shop.

This may sound crazy, but try pulling the seatpost out and greasing it. Sounds that you are -sure- are coming from elsewhere often turn out to be related to the seatpost creaking.

And no, pedaling backward won't hurt a thing.

If it happens at the same point in the stroke it may be a loose peddle. It could also be the bottom bracket...is there any lateral movement in the crank (with the peddle on top, grab the crank and frame and try to move it back and fourth, if there is any movement I would suspect the BB.

Hope this helps,

I had a simialr problem last year and found that tightining the pedal into the crank solved the problem.

I have this problem a lot and it is always something different. Most of the time it is the seatpost. It has been that the spindle on the BB axle needed to be cleaned, once the BB was slightly loose, and finally the chain ring bolts needed greased and cleaned.

It has rained a lot here and the cherty sands of the Norris watershed like to find their way into all the nooks and craneys.

There is no movement in the crank at all. I pedaled with one leg only and it didn't happened which leads to believe it may be the left pedal. That's where I feel the crick at in my stroke. Thanks to everyone and I will post my results.

Okay here's the problem. My Crank was lose. A simple tighten and back off to the races!!!

Yeah, I had the same problem last week. It was so annoying, I'd ripped the BB out and greased it, tightened the seat post and crank.. was still making the damn clicking noise so I tightened the pedals into the crank arm a bit more and it solved the problem.
