Hub Noise. Noob attempts hub overhaul.
hello.
I have a 2006 bianchi volpe. I purchased a used set of mavic open pro rims on ultegra hubs for this bike. I'm guessing they are circa 2002. I decided to overhaul the hubs for a fun project. I removed the cones and bearings. degreased, cleaned, and took to the LBS. They said the cups, cones and bearing were in good shape. I repacked the hubs with teflon grease. When i spin the rear wheel i get a clicking sound from the rear hub. It sounds like bearings clicking together. If i turn the wheel in a horizontal postion while it is spinning the clicking stops. Any idea what is causing this ? other things to note. when i opened the rear hub i noticed the back left dust cover(plastic) was cracked. Also i'm pretty sure I got degreaser in my freehub mech, b/c it ticks much louder now. Any help would be much appreciated. |
Are you sure its the hub? Mavic rims are known for making a clicking sound, once per revolution. Seems likely as the click goes away with the wheel horizontal.
I wouldn't worry about the cracked cover. A loud freewheel is generally a well functioning one. |
When you reinstalled the cones, did you make sure the bearings were in place in the cups? I've sometimes gotten everything snugged down and realized that one bearing was not in place. Check to see if your dust cover is interfering with anything.

A reasonably well lubricated Shimano freehub is generally very quiet but works perfectly. Campy freehubs, on the other hand, work very well but are always loud. |
