Poop. Stripped my crank.

Somehow while riding to work, my left pedal unscrewed from my Sugino Messenger crank but not all the way out. Instead, it tilted and jammed like that. I stopped and reached down but it wouldn't budge by hand and I didn't have any big wrenches or anything so I had to ride the rest of the way with my foot doing a weird wobble. Got to work and managed to get the pedal out but not without stripping the threads on the inside of the crank arm. It's just the outer few threads, but the pedal won't go back in. Think my lbs can fix it or is this brand new $150 crank shot?

You might try running the proper size tap in from the back side.
If really desperate, try screwing in the pedal from the back side (cautiously)

Worst case, they should be able to put a Helicoil in. If it's just a couple of threads that are torn up, they may be able to get it back in with some patience.

I had the same problem. A proper tap will fix the problem. I have been riding the bike it happend to for 3 years with no problems.

I don't understand how poop stripped the crank. I have a mental picture, but it's disgusting.

Exactly what I was thinking.

Also your lbs should have some used cranks laying around - if it's the left side they'll probably sell you one for $10. Just make sure it's the same size as the other one ;)

I had the same thing happen. I had to call around, but I found a lbs that put in a helicoil for ~$15. Beat buying a new crank.

better than a helicoil
