Hub gear availability

I clipped this from a Bike Biz article.

<11:15, Oct 15th 2007 by Carlton Reid
It's not all fine on the city bike front
Want to spec a bike with a hub-gear? Get in the queue, it could be a 200+ day wait. The humble hub-gear is back in a big way.

Many of the city bikes on display at Eurobike and Interbike were fitted with hub-gears from Shimano, SRAM, Sturmey Archer, and Rohloff.

These bikes were wildly popular with show visitors but there may be problems getting enough bikes to market to satisfy consumer demand.

Another key filip for the hub-gear sector - and the reason for the longer than usual lead times - has been the run on hub gears for the city hall rental bikes now becoming increasingly popular across Europe.

JCDecaux and Clear Channel in France, and Bicinceitta in Italy, are building tens of thousands of hub-geared bikes.

Paris alone will have 20,600 Velib self-service bikes by December.>

For those asking why they are hard to get.

Interesting. Luckily I run singlespeed and I have a hub gear wheel in stock, JIC.

I guessed as much when I saw some Taiwanese and Chinese built bikes at Interbike spec'ing German-manufacture SRAM hubs.

On Sram's production vidieo on their website (https://www.sram-imotion.com/) Sram officials claim that a new i9 hub comes off the assemblyline every 25 seconds. Is that not over 1000 hubs per 8 hour day or 23,000 per month (working 5 days a week/4 weeks per month)? This hub has been in production according to sram for over a year. Thats over a quarter of a million hubs per year. I don't think there are that many rental bikes on planet earth. I think sram is slackin.

I'm reading the i9 page, and the list of advantages (of which there are 4) has "sporty transmission" as the first one. WTF is a "sporty transmission"??

Go in About/History, and you will see the carbon fiber version of i-Motion.
It will probably cost twice as much as the aluminum one, but it really looks sporty.

It seems that the Freeweel, i-Brake and Disk brake versions appeared just a month ago.

Also, you can buy i-Motion in the UK. Though, this one is an expensive seller:

Expenisve you say? That store is.... horrendous. I hope he coats each and every piece in platinum and diamonds. Looks like they replaced the prices in USD with GBP, and then added a bit, for good measure.

Well, I just did a currency conversion from pounds to Canadian dollars, and their price of 290 lb works out to $576 Cdn. That is about $39 more than it retails for here.(or will if we can ever get em)
Don't expect to see too many of these showing up at the discount houses.

I was actually looking at the more mundane models (P5, S7). OK, maybe I was wrong. I lost perspective, I have converted my last geared bike last night.

Sure. It still is a pretty pricey bit of gear though when you consider the Alfine is over $200 less.

But S7 costs $210 in the USA and £185 at that shop, while £ is 2 x $.

Here a guy from Germany tells the price of the i-Motion 9-speed kit (with the shifter):
https://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=302311
Here in Germany, the whole kit sells for 260Euro, or $350 USD.
