Need to reface BB on each install?

I've just bought a used CAAD9 frame on ebay from someone who purchased the bike fully built and used it for one season. The stock crankset was external bearing Shimano, and I plan on using the same.

Is facing the bottom bracket something I should do before installing my crankset? I'm just learning about facing a BB shell (just read the Park Tools guide online about it) and never considered it as something I would need to do with my build. Thanks.

Facing only needs to be done once.

Steev is correct. If you have already got an external bearing fitted then the odds are that the facing has already been done. Try to fit an Acros ceramic bearing though as the Shimano and Race face ones are not lasting long!!

This is correct, the Shimano external bottom brackets are not lasting long at all. One problem being that the bearing and casings are of low quality, but the main problem we have are pre-installed bottom brackets from the manufacturer. It seems that the cups are installed with no prep work at all and the slightest misalignment of the bearing cups will greatly reduce the life the bearings. Facing should be done after a paint job or before installing a bottom bracket for the first time.
