Converting BionX 20" wheel to 16" wheel

Hi,

Here's the story in a nutshell... I ordered a Dahon Mu SL on ebay in order to pair it with the BionX PL 350. Unfortunately, I made a big mistake and thought the Mu SL came with 20" wheels, but instead it came with 16" wheels. The BionX kit comes with a 20" wheel.

So I'm wondering... are there shops who will build a custom 16" wheel using the BionX hub?

Bikes: 2006 Windsor Dover w/105, 2007 GT Avalanche w/XT, 1995 Trek 820 setup for touring, 201? Yeah single-speed folder, 199? Huffy tandem.

Don't know anything about BionX, but it seems to me that as long as you have a rim with a matching number of spoke holes (to the BionX hub), any shop could lace it for you. Sounds like you already have the rim. You'll need new spokes--looks like the BionX has huge flanges.

Ok, that's encouraging. I'll bring it in to the local shop.

BTW, I'm still trying to figure out how I got a Dahon Mu SL with 16" wheels. I talked with a Dahon representative today and he said the SL's come with 20" wheels. So maybe I measured the wheels incorrectly?? Correct me if I'm wrong, but you simply measure from one edge of the rim to the other, right?

No not right. The wheel size is about the width of the rim with tire. I know, it's kind of a lame way to measure wheels since different tires will produce different widths.

To know what wheel you have for sure, measure the "bead seat diameter" (BSD)--and see the tables on this page: https://sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html

16" = 406 mm. According to the table, that is the BSD for a modern 20" wheel.

Have you tried just installing the BionX 20" wheel w/tire on the bike? Guarantee you if the bike was made for a 16" wheel, you're not going to be able to get it in there.

It looks to me all's well. Enjoy the bike.

OIC, thanks for clarifying this. I haven't received the BionX kit yet so I wasn't able to compare them side-by-side. But if that's how the wheel size works out it looks like everything's gonna be alright.

Thanks very much! I've obviously got a lot to learn about bikes...
