Max tire size for trek 1000?

I'm looking to soften the ride of my older trek 1000. No carbon, currently running 700x23armadillo tires at 120 psig. I can simply go with lower inflation, but I was thinking 700x35-40. I recently test rode a touring bike and feel that a "touring" configuration would be a bettery fit to my gravity enhanced frame. The LBS says not to go bigger than a x28, but I don't think that would be a significant improvement. Any ideas?

If it is an aluminum Trek (late 80s early 90s) 1000 700 x 28s will just barely fit. In fact depending on the manufacturer of the tires some may not. The under the front fork above the tire area will be the tightest spot. Roger

You'll definitely never get 35s in there. 28s are definitely cushier; I ride them on my fixie.

Thanks guys. Had it not been pointed out I would surely have tried to use x35s. The armadillos ride harsh but I have been several hundred miles or so w/o flats, and I hate to give that up. Guess I'll try the x28s
