Road cassette wobble

ahoy.

The cassette on my shimano r550 wheel wobbles a little when coasting. It really doesn't affect me that much when I'm riding, though my paranoia thinks the shifts are less smooth and the drivetrain is noisier. It's only noticable when lubing my chain on the trainer. I haven't tried taking it apart yet. Is the hub bound to be like that and unfixable?

THanks for any insight.

This is perfectly normal. All cassettes wobble a little when coasting.

Two cassettes out of my eight wheelsets wobble a bit but still work just fine. One is on an old beater wheel with an Alivio hub. I believe it has wobbled like that since the beginning, most likely do to more lenient manufacturing tolerances.

The other is on an seriously abused wheel with an LX hub. I can't say for sure but I don't believe it wobbled until after I got back from a certain trip to Moab where I took more than a couple of 3 foot drops. It's one of the few times I've knocked one of my wheels out of true and the freehub also developed a growling sound after picking up too much sand on that trip as well.

Both cassettes shift just fine but I'm not expecting HG50's to shift like an XT cassettes either.

This is most noticable in hubs with loose ball bearings (like most Shimanos) rather than cartridge.

It's from the one ball's worth of space working it's way around as the parts spin.
