Rear Axle Position

On a bike with rear horizontal dropouts, does it matter where in the dropouts you position the axle?Front, middle or rear?

I changed my rear freewheel from a Shimano 12-30 to a Shimano"Mega"(14-34T) and it seems to shift much, much better with the axle in the rear of the dropouts.I have downtube friction shifters,no indexing.

Nope. Whatever works best and still clears your brake pads. Just remember to cinch that QR down good.

Thanks, just looked sort of funny hanging back there...

Okay, I'm going to qualify a little; I seem to remember someone arguing that you got more precise shifts with the axle centered over the pivot point of the derailleur. But I think it's academic.
