bar end shifter compatibility (ie. campy w/shimano or suntour)

I want to replace the ergo lever/shifters on my cross bike with bar end levers. has anyone successfully run non campy (shimano or suntour) levers with a campy 9 speed derailer? the campy's are like 3 times the $ as the others and Ill only be using the right lever (1x9). any suggestions?

If you are willing to use friction mode, anything goes. My favorites are the old SunTour ratchet barcons.

do the barcons pull enough cable for a 9 speed der?

The barends should pull enough cable for 9-speeds. Remember those old bar ends worked on 'wide' 6 and 7 speeds. John, your right, those old Suntour barends are nice levers. Honestly, I think you'll be un-happy running in friction mode.....sorry, sounds like you need to $pring for the Campys.
