Help dymystify the Rear Derailleur - learning to adjust it?

I want to learn how to do adjustments to the rear derailleur. Does anyone have any advice or leads on articles that can show me how to do it? What are the major things to learn? And how long did it take you to learn?

I have a couple project bikes to work with. Is there a difference in the process for bike with brifters, downtube shifters, friction shifters, or mountain style index shifting? Thanks to all.

Here's a link: https://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=64

You can find excellent info on any part of the bike at the Park website, just click on "repair help", go to the picture of the bike, and click on whatever part you want to work on-

Adjusting screws and cable tension wont do you any good if the rear derailer hanger is bent. First thing to do is get behind the bike to see if the cage for the jockey wheels is in vertical alignment with the wheels. If it is bent, this may be fixed with a crescent wrench, or a replacement hanger. Do any bending with the der attached because you dont want the mounting hole bent out of shape.

It's not too hard to adjust it but expect a little frustration until you get the hang of it. The important thing is to dive right in, but this:

... will help you out tremendously!

BINGO! Since you're just learning, make sure that the derailleur hanger is straight. Otherwise it'll never shift right no matter what you do and you'll think that you must be doing something wrong and won't learn anything.

Niccolo, I made a video tutorial that explains how to adjust a rear derailleur. It's my first video so I realize I could have done a better job explaining it, but I'm hoping you'll find it somewhat useful. Cheers!
