24.2 mm seat post???

I need a 24.2 mm seat post to replace the one on this free tandem MTB I have.

The rear post was a standard 25.4 mm, but the front was measured at 24.2 mm with calipers. The welded on rear stem on the front post is all twisted (bike must have fallen over and the rear bars twisted).

I was hoping to buy a 24.2 mm post today and use a 0.6 mm thick shim between it and a 25.4 mm stem. LBS said this was a very odd/rare size as is anything between 22.2 mm (7/8") and 25.4 mm (1"), though I have found 25.0 mm online.

LBS suggested a shimmed 22.2 mm BMX seat post, but it would probably be too weak. Or a custom made tube/bar with 24.2 mm diameter tapered to 22.2 mm up top for the seat clamp, but don't think the bike is worth that much trouble.

SO...anyone have any ideas?

I found these threads, the first is old, the second is ironically from yesterday, neither very helpful:

I ran into the same problem, but on a late 80s early 90s Raleigh (go figure). I went with a BMX post and it has held up well for about a year so far. I'm 160 pounds and bounce on my saddle quite often (SS conversion). You might want to take a second look at the BMX stuff that's out there.

Thanks, I'll look into BMX post, some look strong. What odd size did you need anyway? What did you do about the shim, were you able to find a pre-fabricated one or did you just find some appropriately thick sheet metal?

There are fractional inch size posts. I there are 7/8" and 15/16" posts. Go to the LBS and ask them to order one of those or both as they come in steel and are pretty cheap. And figure out which one fits bette
