Derailleur question
ok, so here we go: i had a 105 triple set up on my road bike. recently, however, i have switched to a double. shimano says that their shifters work with both double and triple set ups, but i'm having problems dialing in my front shifting (the throw is set up for triple rings, which causes obvious problems with the current double set-up). is that due to the fact that my front derailleur is for a triple? if i get a derailleur set up for double will my shifting work better? or is the problem in the shift levers? please advise.

It's in the levers. I don't know much about the indexing in brifters or how to adjust them, but the front derailleur works for as many rings as you want as long as the lever will pull the appropriate amount of cable.

I have 105 triple shifters but I have a double crank and it works fine for me. I have it set so that the lowest gear on the shifter hits my low ring and the middle gear on the shifter hits the high ring. The derailluer set screw prevents the shifter from going any higher. Did you adjust the set screws on the derailluer to match the new double?

A double FD will work better than the triple FD, but you should be able to get the triple dialed in well enough to ride. See the Park Tool site and go through the complete FD adjustment sequence.

yeah, i'll check that out. the weirdest thing is that i had it all dialed in, then didn't touch the bike for about a month, then came back and it wouldn't shift back up to the big ring. so annoying.

There is really no difference in setting up 105 shifters for double or triple cranks. Following the instructions at the Park Tool website is a good idea. Be sure all of the cable is out of the shifter (flip the small shift lever several times) before attaching the cable.
A double front derailleur would be better but you can probably make the triple FD work fine.
