Headset Service

O.K., I have a LWB recumbent with a threaded headset. Last winter, after about 4500 miles, I cleaned and regreased the headset. 1 year and 2500 miles later, I'm wondering how often one should do this little maintenance chore. I ride paved trails, am gentle on the bike, and keep everything real clean. So, how often? bk

How did it look last winter when you took it apart? Wouldn't hurt to take it apart again this winter. If it is still in good shape, you might consider going longer than 1 yr/2500mi for the next overhaul. I'm assuming you replaced the ball bearings last winter and would do that with every servicing.

Headsets don't spin constantly like all the other bearings on the bike so they don't really need a lot of maintainance. If it doesn't get a whole lot of water and grit thrown at it and it still feels smooth when you turn it back and forth it's probably ok to let it go longer than 2500 miles if you want to. That being said, once a year wouldn't be over doing it either. Like JanMM said, consider how it looked after the first 4500 and go from there.

Well, I pulled it all apart and cleaned/checked the races. They were in great shape. I took the cages & balls to the LBS and bought two new ones for $6.00. Greased everything and had it back together in no time. I was surpised at how easy a job it was. Thanks for the encouragement, guys. bk
