Analysis of Spoke Tension and Other Forces in a Bicycle Wheels
More than you may ever need to know about Spoke Tension.....
https://www.duke.edu/~hpgavin/papers/...heel-Paper.pdf
Conclusion: Not much difference between 2X, 3X and 4X.....

In brief, the conclusion of the study is:
"A typical bicycle wheel is a robust structure with very good fatigue life. Theoretically, the hub/spoke/rim system will work in bicycling applications with very little problems."

interesting paper...
wish he would have done an analisys on a rear wheel with the radial spokes on the drive side and the 2/3/4X pattern on the non-drive side.

I find it surprising that 2x is stiffer than 3x and 4x. It makes sense, but I didn't think it would be a matter of building a wheel with durability at the expense of stiffness (lateral stiffness).

For those whohave not had enough with the Duke paper or Jobst Brandt, there's also a book being sold on Ebay, The Spoken Wheel, written by an aerospace engineer cyclist. He derives formulas and applies them to a huge variety of configurations. $12.00 BIN, and there are a few copies.
I think it's great, but well, you know, engineers ....
