Mavic Aksium for a Clyde?
 

Good friend of mine was going to give me a pair of his Mavic Aksiums - wondering if they'll hold me up at 280#s (and dropping ;) ). Read some threads here they seem to be on the strong side, he's a little above 200 and they served him well for a few years.

According to this there's no weight limit from Mavic on those.

Thoughts?

I'm running a set on my road bike. They are strong,well made and look good too. I had to purchase mine in order to join the Aksium club and youre' getting a free membership!! Way to go ------ you should be fine. Lp

I'm around 280 right now myself if not more (and dropping as well) and my Askiums do just fine.

The Aksium is probably the best of the Mavic road wheelsets for Clydes: built for stout, spin very smoothly.

This is a useful thread. I just found some cracks on my current rear wheel (not Mavic Aksiums), and I was wondering if the Aksiums would be beefy enough as replacements? I'm 215 pounds, but the roads in Pennsylvania leave something to be desired (smoothness, maintenance, etc)

Apparently the 2008 Aksiums are lighter than previous model years. Do any Clydes have feed back on the 2008 model year Aksium wheels?

I'm 270 and just did a 145 mile trip on mine - I think they'll be fine though I don't have any firsthand knowledge of the 2008 ones.

They did go out of true a little and I popped a spoke but I think that was caused to a bad truing, after I got it trued at a different shop they've stayed true and I've hit some monster holes.

Can't say I wholly agree on the performance of mine. I'm 95Kg (210 lb) and have cracked a rim at the eyelets (warranty replaced), broken spokes a number of times. Once a spoke is broken, its give up for the day because the wheel wobbles too much. With 4 sets of repairs I've finally pensioned them off for about 9,000-10,000Km of overall riding. No problems with front wheel though. My first bike so I don't know whether that's a reasonable lifespan or not.

Was it hand built/tensioned? Sounds like a build issue (I think it was with mine) which is *almost* more important than the materials.
