Will this freewheel work?
 

Hi, I figured you all here in the mechanics forum could help me out. I have an old Zeus hub, that currently has 6 speed Shimano freewheel on it that needs to be replaced. So I need to know if a Regina America 6 speed freewheel with ISO threading would work. I'm new to geared bikes and the different types of threading that comes with this territory. If this is like asking if milk goes with cookies, I apologize. But I'm just making sure! Thanks a bunch.

Yes, freewheel threading is quite well standardized. There used to be an oddball French size, but that went extinct sometime in the '80s.

Your hub will work fine with any freewheel, though I would consider it a bit of a downgrade to go from a Shimano to a Regina. You'll likely suffer a deterioration in shifting quality.

A bit late here, but I had Zeus components on a bike in the 80's that I bought in Spain. FWIW, I was told all the threads were French. Since they were all Zeus (and cool looking) I never had to worry about mismatching anything. They lasted until the Alan frame went to the bone yard because all the AL lugs cracked.

I'll think of him when sorting out a cassette tomorrow. I remember the first time he responded to something I'd posted here. It was like the angel of bicycle mechanics came down and adjusted my front derailleur.

Wish I had the same experience. I know my FD sorely needed it, until I tossed it out that is.

I don't know the exact time of his passing, but according to Bicycling.com, where I got the news, he passed on Sunday the 3rd, the date of his last post. I'd like to think that he passed away doing something related to what he loved, namely answering bicycle related questions since he had a hard time cycling.

I'm so sorry. I feel like we all just lost of family member. I'm printing a copy of this from Bicycling magazine and placing it on the wall my bike workshop.

I knew the biking community had lost a knowledgeable man when the old master I go to locally for bike help said he was going to miss Sheldon because HE was the old master!

This is really touching to read. I was actually just searching around for gear stuff, and fell into this thread. I really speaks volumes that this community had such a well-known member that so many cared about. I hope that one day people will speak of me so fondly.

And his legacy lives on along with his unique personality and no nonsense approach at www.sheldonbrown.com . Just the fact that he took the time to write all that stuff and host it says a lot about how he wanted to share his love of bicycles with the rest of the world. If the rest of civilization's ambassadors and leaders were more like him "war" and "strife" would be words found only in a dictionary of obscure terms.

Love his glossary of all things bicycle, great resource. Personally always felt that replacing a Regina freewheel with Shimano improved the shifting quality, no doubt now. Godspeed Sheldon, you are missed.
