Handle bar brackets too small for light and speedometer
 

Just yesterday I purchased a brand new Specialized Allez elite bike. Well
today I started transferring some of my accessories over from my old bike
such as my lights and speedometer.

My speedometer is the Specialized SpeedZone Sport. Well the problem is that
the handle bars on this new bike are much larger than my old handle bars and
even with taking all the rubber padding out from inside the brackets, the
handlebars are too big around to mount the brackets. I know someone else has
to have come up against this problem, could you please tell me how you dealt
with it.

First I rummage thru my collection of brackets from blinkies that have given out and other accessory mounts. That produces something that will work 80% of the time. For the other 20% I start by replacing the bolts with longer bolts. I usually try to use stainless steel since they rust less, and are non-magnetic and less likely to interfer with things like computers. If that doesn't work, you can consider mounting somewhere off the handlebar. Profile Design makes little pegs for that purpose. If you don't mind ugly, you can make one yourself using the cap and neck of a plastic soda bottle and a zip-tie. It will be OK for something light like a computer.

Run a zip tie through the hole the screw usually goes through and pull tight. You will never have it vibrate loose, but you can adjust its position if you have to.

What year is your computer? Try contacting Specialized and ask for a bracket for oversized (31.8mm) bars... or you could just get it from their spare parts website. You may also want to investigate this option which I think is pretty slick.

I just bought my computer this year at the LBS so I assume it is either a 2002 or 2003 model.

I have since posting the original post used one of the suggestions and used a tie wrap to attach the original mounting bracket to the handlebars for now. This will do for a short term solution but I really must find something better long term. I have since come up with another problem though.

The magnet which attaches to the spokes worked fine on my old schwinn with the round spokes. Well the spokes on this Allez are not round. The body of the spoke is flat, so the only way to mount the magnet on the spoke is on the narrow side. This is facing away from the pickup at 90 degrees. As a result the field isn't passing the pickup the right way and therefore the pickup isn't picking up the magnet. Does anyone have any suggestions for this dilema?

It would seem that since the bike and the computer were made by the same company, I wouldn't have all of these compatability problems.

You can trim your tape back about an inch and mount your stuff next to the bulge. I set these up new and have the same problem.

Go to the links in my previous post. Those will work for current model Speedzones but not the Speedzone Classics. There's a different mount for the classics.

Mavic sells a universal magnet that will work equally well on bladed or round spokes.

Specialized also sells an adhesive magnet that works with bladed spokes.

There are many different designs in cycling with components coming in all shapes and sizes. Specialized participates in covering many of the different design types but can't cover them all. They also impliment across a broad spectrum of those design types. One can't expect a universal fit between all Specialized components against every other one. They do provide appropriate fitting solutions however.

Thanks alot khuon. I believe you have addressed the two problem areas. I plan to take the bike up to the LBS I bought it from tommorow and just let them address my issues. I figure they might have the necessary components to make everything work. IF they don't I suppose I will order what I need.

It still seems rather interesting that so many adaptations would have to be made to a Specialized computer to work on a specialized bike.

I talked to them on Saturday about setting up the computer this week and they said no problem they would do it. I just thought I would go ahead and get a jump start and get it done today. Ohh well, guess I will just have to make them earn their profit margin on that bike LOL.
