RockShox Service Question
 

Maybe the Right Reverend or one of the other "mechanics" around here can tell me. Got a Metro Mag on my Trek Hybrid and was reading the "instructions" and saw a service reccomendation for every 2 hours of riding WTH. Did I misunderstand? Not sure how many "hours" I have on the thing, but I have easily 1000 miles on it. Have I toasted it? Every 2 hours, EGADS why didn't the LBS tell me that when I was asking questions to make informed decision prior to purchasing. Been keeping the "seals" lubricated, and lifting the boots to keep the cylinders clean but geesh.

The service instructions seem so intimidating, am I better off just ditching the thing and getting a non-suspension fork, couldn't be that expensive compared to taking the dang thing in and having it serviced at that kind of interval and even though I have a second bike, I would sure miss the thing a lot if it had to spend that much time in the shop. This is certainly a case where I miss the old days when things were far less "advanced" so to speak.

It is a good idea to check under your boots every now and then and to lube the seal/wiper area. But, I have seen forks with over 8000miles on them with NO service before they finally keeled over. I will look into your fork, but I am off until Friday so it will be a day or so before I have any hard answer.

You have no idea, or maybe you do, what a relief it was to hear that. Gonna dig up the "owner's manual" again, and re-read to see what I was missing. I know enough to keep it clean, and keep the cylinders lubed so the gaskets don't get funky, and prevent contamination, but that's the extent of my hydraulic knowledge.

Thanks for the reply, and taking the time to research further. I'm in the market for another LBS, and glad I have so many to choose from. I took my older Trek 520 in (to a Trek dealer that sold me my newer Trek) when I put it back into service, and told them I would like to replace the brake pads since after 15 some years, I figured they had hardened to the point they should be replaced. They looked at the pads, and said these are probably the only things we have that will fit. Not a very bright lad I fear, and he gave me pads that are too long and rub on the front fork. DOYYYYYYYYY the brakes are old but not obsolete. They function just fine and I can't see replacing them just so I can get pads that fit. Shoulda took them off the bike and to the store, but the bike was in my van so I figued I couldn't go wrong. Guess they didn't appreciate my vintage machine as much as I do, I know I'll find someone who does before I by my next bike in spring. SO I may have gone a long way to say, you seem like the kinda wrench I would be MORE than happy to do business with if you were local!!

every 8 hours/week, wipe it down and lube the seal/wiper.
Once a year/100hours, pull the fork down, clean and grease the bushings and grease the springs.

Thanks Chuck, that's much more reasonable. I know I will be riding it much less than I have this year, and am already putting more time & miles on my 520 so I can just take the thing in and have it serviced once a year, or perhaps buy a manual and just do it myself. Found their reccomendation which lube to use on the seals so I have been doing that much at least and about at the interval you suggested.
