Levers on Mirage 9-speed shifters: stiffen?
I feel like I need to push the levers on my Mirage 9-speed Ergo shifters too far in to downshift. Would anyone happen to know if there is an adjustment for this to make them stiffer? I've done some searching on the web, but haven't found any pertinent information.
Thanks

How old are they? Have you ever changed the G-springs? What condition are the cables and housing in? Are you using Campagnolo cables and housing? Have you changed or adjusted anything lately?

Thanks. And now to your questions:
How old are they?
I bought them last summer (2007). They'd probably been sitting in my LBS, which is run by nice enough guys who care and know nothing about road cycling or bikes, for any number of years, though they are post-2001.
Have you ever changed the G-springs?
No. And I don't know what those are, either. I guess it's research time, eh?
What condition are the cables and housing in?
Good enough condition, I figure. They're original from when I purchased the shifters, and I've put about 2,600 kms on them.
Are you using Campagnolo cables and housing?
Yes.
Have you changed or adjusted anything lately?
Well, I put a new quill stem on the bike recently, which required that I remove the shifters from the bars. However, my complaint has been from day one: I wish I didn't have to push inward so far to get the click for the shift. I wish it would be more like a "tap" instead of a somewhat laboured and extended push. If you know what I mean.

I just found this on the web:
Rebuild Your Ergo Lever!.
It appears that the G-springs are the ones that determine how stiff your shifting is.
And on the same site:
I like the idea of stiffer shifting. That's kind of what I'm talking about. Sigh.
Rebuild Your Ergo Lever!.

And on the same site:
As we reported in the rumor below, competitor SRAM is offering a new "Red" gruppo that's lighter than Record. Not to be outdone, Campagnolo is now offering a special, pro-only Ergo lever set with (guess what) red highlights. The red letter levers have stiffer springs for the stiffer, crisper shifts demanded by the pros. They won't be offered to the public, which Campagnolo feels is well-served by the softer, less crisp shifts of the latest levers. Campy Only notes that Campagnolo's transition to lighter shifts is fairly recent--their Ergo levers originally had a much more solid feel.

Since you are running 9-spd, there is no upgrade that you can make that will alter this factor as all of the QS shifters and Fr der were designed for 10-spd. The left hand shifters would be fine but the rights wouldn't work on your system.
