Wheelbuilding FURY (leading to humble question-asking)

OK, see, I'm building wheels. I'm using Alexis DA28 rims and Shimano 105 hubs.

Neither of these are in the copy of Spocalc that I've got and it no longer seems to be available from its home site.

But I did a little bit of guessing. Which, ironically, made an Ass out of U and Me.

So, I found the specs for the DA28s online Those numbers made sense.

And I guessed at the hubs, picking similar ones to the one I've got. That seems to have been an error. This rear wheel has no dish whatsoever. I'm starting to strip nipples* here and I'm still off by a centimeter or so.

So the question is one of the following (answer the one you like):

1: Where do I find a copy of Spocalc that has the specs for Shimano 105 hubs and Alex DA28 rims?
2: What *other* spoke calculator can I use that will tell me what I need to know?
3: Where do I find the specs for these hubs otherwise so I can put them into Spocalc?
3a: Is there a repository for this information so when one of us figures it out, we can share it?

depending on what series 105 hub you have (5600, 5500 etc...) the numbers are going to be different.

i would personally measure the hubs yourself. here is a pretty detailed website to help you.

https://www.geocities.com/spokeanwheel/measure.htm

as for the rim the ERD you should be using is 584.8

EDIT:
I just found that Shimano finally published their hub specs on their web site but its seems as if they're only for the newer 5600 series. If this is the case then you are in luck.

5600 series hubs
Front
spoke hole diameter: 38mm
center to flange for left and right 35.8

Rear
spoke hole diameter 45mm
center to right 20.8
center to left 38.4

I had the same problem - one of the hubs I was using and one of the rims weren't in the spocalc. I measured dimensions of both, and as it turned out, arrived at the correct spoke lengths. I used vernier caliper for the hub, and piece of thread for the rim.

Good luck.

Sheldon's site has Damon Rinard's How to measure hub and rim dimensions.

Excellent. Thanks, folks.

Does anyone know what happened to Spocalc? Can we open source it, perhaps?

Joshua,

Here's the site that originated "spokecalc" to calculate spoke length from your hub and rim dimensions. You can use the program online.

https://www.wheelpro.co.uk/spokecalc/

SpokesCalc is still there but the address may be slightly different

There may also be more than one version of calculator program with similar names.

Hey, thanks everyone. I was misidentifying the problem. The Stripples™ were happening because I started the NDS too tight and then wound up fighting it. Live and learn.

(Do you "catch a case of the stripples" maybe?)
