8sp-9sp-10sp compatibility

I am doing a Shimano component shuffle on my bikes. My Carrera will be converted to 10sp and my 8sp beater will get all the old 9sp stuff off the Carrera. So the questions are: 1. How much on the Carrera do I need to change- shifters of course, plus chain and casstte but what about front derailleur- is the cage wider on 9sp than 10sp? I understand the splined hub on the back wheel is good for 9 or 10sp. 2. Can I fit the 9sp cassette straight on the wheel of the 8 sp beater? Or do I have to change it? Is the splined hub still available? The hub is very old Shimano Dura Ace. All the other 9sp bits will come straight from the Carrera. Thanks

Assuming both are standard, modern road bikes: To convert the 9 to 10-speed, you need shifters, chain and cassette. The 10-speed chain is less than 1/2 mm more narrow than a 9-speed.

An 8/9/10-speed Shimano hub will take any of the cassettes. I am assuming your old DA freehub body has threads on the inside for a lock ring.

"Is the splined hub still available?" Don't know what you are asking. All cassette hubs are splined.

The 9-speed derailleurs should work fine with the 10-speed drive train if the crankset is a double and probably if it is a triple. The front derailleur is a bit wider than the 10-speed but will probably work well if double to double.
I see one potential problem. If the 8-speed rear derailleur (on the beater bike) is Dura-Ace it won't be compatible with 9-speed spacing although there is an alternate cable routing that may make it work OK. 9-speed RD is compatible with 10-speed spacing.
