Chain Noise Question

On my new bike, I get some chain noise but only in certain cogs, near the middle of the cassette, and only when I am cranking on it with moderate effort. But it's only in one or two cogs. While I was getting fitted in the shop today, I had them look at it. The guy said it would probably go away as the chain and cogs wear a bit. Is that true? I thought this kind of noise was from worn chains--which this is definately not.

You might have worn cassette. I had a rattle that was a loose cassette assembly, it wasn't torqued up properly before the wheel was installed on the bike.

Better not be worn after 208km! Especially since I was told that I over oiled the chain (didn't realize that I had that much on there, now that's it picked up some road grit I can see that I did put too much on).

I'll check on the cassette before the next ride, thanks.

I put the splined cassette tool on and found the threaded outer ring was loose and almost fell off. In my case I had a very worn cassette (I also had chain skip) and a new, tightened cassette, no noise.

if your on the big wheel on the front but you're getting noise on the middle back cogs, it could just be that you need to adjust the hi and lo settings on the front mech a little.

I rarely use the big ring, mostly just middle. Definately not FD rubbing.
