xero lite wheels...arrrgggg.

The stupid quick release lever on my front wheel rattles like crazy and as far as I can tell there is no way to make it stop.
Stupid cheap-o wheels.

are the wheels at fault, or the quick release?

Just to make sure here, you do have the lever closed right? I really don't see how the quick relaese could rattle if the lever is closed.

Yeah, Camilo you`re right it isn`t the wheels it is the skewer...but they came with the wheels.

Ray,

yeah the lever is closed and as tight as it ought to be.

The lever itself seems to have a little play even though it`s closed and tight. It looks like maybe a couple of mm`s of play. Just enough to rattle like the whole front end of the bike is going to detonate while riding.

Near as I can tell there is nothing else wrong with the QR. It tightens fine and holds well....just that weird and annoying rattle. I`m debating getting a rubber o-ring and slipping it over the lever (to where the lever and the base...nut? meet.)

I`ll snap a quick pic of it...

Don't let it get you down and spoil your nice wheels. You can get good skewers $20 retail or $10 on ebay.

Unless you can afford it and like the bling (not that there's anything wrong with that), don't spend a heck of a lot. Speaking strictly in terms of full retail pricing (e.g. Performance Bike), the $20 skewers weigh about 110-130 grams for the pair. The expensive titanium and/or carbon ones weigh about 60-90. You can probably go to your LBS and get an el-cheapo for free or $5 that unless someone told you or you actually weighted it, you'd never realize weighed an ounce more than the expensive one That's what I'd do if the rattling was bugging me.

Is it me or does that not look closed all the way? Looks like there's a bit of a gap there.

When adjusting the tension, I hope you remember not to spin the lever but the other side instead. And when closing it, it should leave a slight imprint on your hand.

Siu Blue Wind,

Yeah, I thought about that as well. To the end that I went back and re-tightened my QR...that didn`t work. Plus, yeah I`m sure I have the tension set up right. Meh, I think that it`s just el cheapo QR`s...

hey guys,

thanks for all the help.

Yeah the spring is still on the skewer, but maybe it`s weak or something?
I think I`ll have to order a set from nashbar, those look pretty decent.

Cheers

My shop had bunch of problems (10+) with these skewers last year. They develop a little play at the lever that doesn't affect the function of the QR but will drive you nuts. If it's a new bike, go back to the dealer and ask them to swap it for one that doesn't rattle. If the bike isn't new, find any cheap front QR and replace the noisy one.
Or tape it to the frame- like I said before, there is nothing unsafe about the one the OP has.

If you want cheap you might be able to McGyver it down with a rubber band. If you have a nice thick one lying around it could be an instant fix and will at least stop the noise until your new skewers arrive.
