The New Build

I have several parts I have acquired over the past year (friends, trashcans, friends in trashcans, dumpster diving, etc) and I am frankensteining a bike together on a frame I really like.

Because I ride around on mainly flat terrain with hills that most roadies laugh at I am planning on running a single chainring in the front and an 8-speed gearing in the back. Before I get in over my head I have a couple questions

The only downtube shifter I have currently have in spare parts been is a set of 105 5-speed shifters. Woule I be able to get 8 speeds out of it if I were to use it in friction mode? I thought I read it once before but now I am not so sure.

Do I need to use a front derailluer with a single chainring in the front to keep the chain from jumping off track?

The former fork on the bike used a 1" threaded headset with a 22.2(?)mm stem. Can this be adapted to a 1" threadless fork with the right headset?

Yes, you should be able to use your down tube shifter in friction mode with any number of speeds. I personally used 6-speed shifters with a 9-speed cassette in friction mode.

I am not sure if you would need the front derailler. I would not put it on and, if I wold run into any problems, install it later.

You should be able to install 1" threadless fork on this bike. You will need a new headset stem though.

A big thanks for your help BikeGarage.

The previous owner of the bike had set it up as a fixed gear but thankfully left all the brazons intact. I really liked the fit and feel of the bike but didn't care for the fixed gear setup that he had (plus I already have a fixed gear). I decided to keep with having a double chainring in front.

I had never set up a front and rear derailluer from scratch so setting the high and low was a challenge at first but now that I have some clue of what I am doing it runs very smoothly through all the gears.

If it's a road style bike then you might get away with the single (w/o f.dr) in the front.

In the past I had the same idea to build a bike with 1 chain ring and an 8 speed cassette. However I always fell into trouble when hoping curbs. The chain would almost always fall off.

There are chain rings where you can get that have the guards on both sides. They help quite a bit.

Why, oh why, do you deprive us of pics?

The three builds I've done have a single ring in front. Every so often, it jumps off — typically when I'm shifting all the way from low to high coming up to a stop sign. I think I do a little kickback thing with my feet that suddenly slacks the chain. So you have to learn to keep it on a little, but no biggie.

I've got a nine-speed casette in the back on one and it's kinda noisy in low gear. Eight has been fine.

I think the shifter will be OK in friction mode. Were there 5-speed SIS shifters?
