Suntour RD issues
Hello all, perhaps one of you can shed some light on what may be happening on a bike I am restoring.
I am trying to restore a 1985/86 Trek 830 to working condition. I picked it up at a local Salvation army store for cheap and wanted to replace an undersized Specialized Hardrock.
I have replaced the chain, but since the friction shifters were broken, I put on Altus indexing shifters (i had them laying around). The FD was not a problem to get it dialed in, but I am having problems with the RD. The RD is a Suntour XC. The new freewheel is Shimano and so is the new shifters.
The problem: I cannot get the RD to "see" the two highest gears on the freewheel (14 and 16 tooth sprockets). The RD does not sit on the lowest gear on the freewheel (28 tooth sprocket) very well and will shift out to the next lowest ASAP. I have tried adjusting the H and L screws on the RD, but am I looking at a compatibility issue instead?
Thanks for your help.
