Schwinn World Tourist
In an attempt to get my mother riding after she gets her breast cancer sorted out I got her a schwinn world tourist for mothers day. I was going to clean it, grease it, and do some replacing of the normally worn parts. I got some Continental Ultra Sport 27", Sram chain, Tubes and rim strips, and cables. The problem I am having is with the cables. They seem to be a system that I have never seen before and the shifting housings aren't removable, and the cable are solid, not braided. I guess I should just get new 5 speed thumb shifters, right?

Try over in Classic & Vintage. They love these kinds of questions over there.

Sounds like you may have the Schwinn FF system. The crank freewheels going down the road, instead of the rear wheel. I have one & it works great. They were made in 5 & 10 spds. Check this link for possible answers;
