procedure for installing handlebar, handlebar tape, stem, shifter, etc.

This is going to a very very amateurish question.

So I have a Nitto drop bar. I have ultegra sti shifters. I have not installed bar tape yet. What is the first thing I do? When I just slip the sti shifters onto the handlebar, they are obviously not secure, they slip right off. Is there some sort of mechanism that tightens the shifter onto the handle bar? If so, where is this mechanism? is it a screw I need to tighten? Or do I need use handle bar tape to wrap around the shifter in order to secure it onto the handle bar.
Also do I need to do all this BEFORE installing it onto the stem?

Pictures would help but anything is appreciated.
I am seriously uninformed when it comes to this stuff.
Thanks!

STI shifters have a tightening bolt located at the base of a groove that can be seen on the outside edge of both shifter bodies. The groove runs under the rubber hood and at the base is a 5 mm hex head bolt. Slip a 5 mm Allen key down the groove until it seats in the bolt and tighten them clockwise. You must align and tighten these shifters before you wrap the bars.

Go to Park Tool's web site for illustrations and to Shimano's web site for installation and set up instructions.

+1

If your having troubles here is the link that will get you to the Shimano installation pdf:
https://techdocs.shimano.com/techdocs/index.jsp

Also, it's a good idea IMHO to put some locktite between the metal band that clamps onto your bars and the bars themselves to prevent any possible rattles down the road.

Have you loosened the bolt? By the way, though your bars have a clamp diameter of 26mm, the rest of the bar likely has a standard diameter of 23.8mm.
