Older 8 speed Dura-Ace RD with newer Sora sti

Greetings! For my first post I have a question about old dura ace if you'd be so kind:

After looking through Sheldon Brown's excellent dura ace page and this CTC page here, I understand that I cannot use a old DA shifter with newer rear deraileurs, but does this apply in the opposite case as well? With a (possibly) old DA rear derailleur and a newer sti shifter being a possible repair possibility?

Currently I have the setup with an old 105 8 speed sti shifter which broke a few days ago and I'm trying to replace it with a cheaper 8 speed sti (sora). So my questions are:
  1. [*]
  2. [*]

Thanks a million!

Pre-9-speed Dura-Ace derailleurs have a proprietary throw ratio to match the pre-9-speed D-A shifters' proprietary cable pull. These early D-A rear derailleurs are not normally compatible with other Shimano shifters but there may be an alternate cable routing to the derailleur fixing bolt that will let it work with Sora shifters. I thought Sheldon Brown covered that.
