shifting problems

I do not know how many miles I put on my bike last year, did not have a compter for a while, but probably over a 1000. Took the bike to the LBS over the winter for tune up. Have not had a lot of time to ride this year, but starting Friday that has changed. Friday morning I rode about 20 miles or so in to work. No problems at all, shifting smooth and very nice ride. Parked my bike in my office and went to clinic downstairs. At lunch I came back upstairs and my bike was gone. So I alpha paged all the scum bag doctors down the hall and told them the police was in my office and had a few questions. Suddenly they told my my bike was locked in the drs bathroom. Just a funny, all the guys are hoots and was playing a joke. I really had not called the cops I knew how it was immediately. Any way on my way home that evening shifting became very difficult. I had to pay attention to shifting my front shifter (Tiagra) into the middle sprocket. By the time i got home the it was nearly a SS. Took it to the bike shop this am and the wrench adjusted a few things I took it out for a ride. felt perfect in the parking lot. Took it out for a short ride a few minutes ago and it is all screwed up again. It is tiagra and 105. Is there something simple I can do to fix it? Thanks sorry I kinda rambled. I am kinda honked cause finally getting a chance to ride and my bike aint working.

l am still having problems. I have taken it back to the wrench twice. sounds like the chian drags on the front derailer (sp) and when I really pedal hard it slips on the front cog. before this problem it was very smooth. I think I might be a bicycle hypochondriac. Are your shifters perfectly smooth all the time?

They are...unless they aren't.

Then again, I'm a professional wrench. My stuff is either dialed or neglected because I'm fixing everyone else's stuff.

When I get drivetrain issues like this, I treat it as though it is both brand new and well-used, meaning that I go back to scratch as if I'm installing the components for the very first time, checking all the alignments and setup. Later when adjusting everything, I treat it as though everything needs lube, is dirty and neglected, checking every part of the subsystems (cables, stops, looking for bent components, etc.).

I'm sorry if that's a bit vague, but you can get much more of an oversight from reading Sheldon's or Park Tool's sites than I can give you in a brief post.

Based on your OP the bike has a Tiagra triple crankset. The shifters have two positions to be used when the chain is on the middle chainring. These two positions should be used for trimming the front derailleur to avoid chainrub when the chain is running on the left or right side of the cassette.
Your problem could also be due to the front shift cable slipping at the derailleur fixing bolt.
