upgrade 7 speed index to 8 speed campy ergo shifter, keeping everything else 7-speed
I want to upgrade my 7 speed aluminum bike (vitus) to use 8 speed campy ergo shifter. What models should I look for? athena? chorus? record? I know the world has gone to 10 speed, but what models were available back then for 8 speed? My rear hub has sachs 7 speed freewheel. I don't want to change anything else, at
least for now. Will the spacing work between them? thanks.

Any Campy 8sp setup will work. Campy 8 uses 5mm cog spacing, which is the same spacing as all 7sp systems.
8sp campy can be a little hard to find. You need to use a campy derailleur too, and it has to be "old" campy, which means (I think) pre-2001.
Particular model shouldn't make much difference. It is hard enough to find that you will probably have to take what you can get.
I was going to go this route, but couldn't find the parts I needed cheap enough for me. I ended up going with bar-ends. Good luck to you!

That's good to know I can use 8sp setup with 7sp freewheel. I don't mind losing
one click. I actually have a 9 speed RD, that will work too.
Barend shifters sounds like a good alternative. Where can I find those? I could
use bullhorn setup to get the shifter and brake lever close together.
thanks.

eBay is probably your best bet for barends. 7sp barends exist, but good luck finding them. I ended up using old style Suntour Barcons (friction only) and I really like them. They seem to run about $15-20 and if you don't care about indexing they will work with just about any combination of derailleur, chain, and cassette.
There haven't been many occasions when I regretted having them instead of integrated shifters.
It's definitely an option.
