help me find a crankset 165mm, square taper?

the only catch is that it has to be a 4 bolt attachment to the chainwheel.

im trying to fit these cranks to a single speed strida that could use a touch more top end. I researched a bit and ppl are pointing to reducing the crank length FROM 175mm to 165mm. I figure this could also help my bad knee.

So... right now what I have looks like this:

now.. in my neck of the woods, TORONTO canada, finding anything shorter than 170mm is apparently pretty hard... many a LBS say its a kids crank.

please prove me right in that im just shopping in the wrong stores...

any other opinions, any other downsides? the strida has a MASSIVE 53 tooth beltwheel, so would i really lose that much torque?

The torque that your leg applies is directly proportional to the crank length, so a 165mm would have 165/175 = 94% the torque of a 175mm.

It IS difficult to find 165mm! I found some great deals craigslist) on older Campy stuff but it's always 170 or longer. Good luck in your search!

I'm confused. By top end do you mean "faster". Because shortening the crank arm, while maintaining everything else, will decrease your effective top end.

Exactly. Besides, if you're set on this, why don't you just get a new ring, too? You can get the Sugino SS cranks with the chainring of your choice for pretty cheap.

Or, wanna increase your top end get a different cog/freewheel! Even buying an ENO you're paying the same as you would for a new crank.

I can think of all kinds of reasons to do anything but what you're trying to do.

165 will make it more spinny, better for your knees, yes, but more RPMs at the same speed.

If you can switch chainrings to a 5-bolt, there are many track cranks in 165, in fact, it's pretty standard. I have a set of 165 Origin 8's on my rain bike, that I bought for $30 or so.

Cadence (RPMs) is independent of crank length. At a given speed and gear ratio, the RPMs will be the same no matter what the crank length. Crank length affects the radius--and therefore--circumference of the path of your foot around the bottom bracket. It will feel more spinny because your feet actually have a shorter distance to travel, but they will actually be moving slower linearly because there is a shorter distance (circumference) to travel per revolution.

So if I kept the same linear speed, would that equal more revolutions?

NYCBikes.com has a crankset that's available in square-taper and ISIS, 165, 167.5, and 170mm. They market it for fixies but with the right bolts it will take double chainrings. The only problem is that it has a 5-arm spider.
