How to remove fork/headset and install new fork/headset
Hi, i am getting a new carbon threadless fork to replace my steel threaded fork on my track bike. I was wondering how you remove a threaded fork and headset. I probably will just have my lbs install the headset and fork unless someone has some easy to follow instructions, but if i can remove the current headset and fork myself it would be nice to save a few bucks.
thanks
thanks

the ghetto specialized-tool-free do it yourself method:
first loosen your stem and pull that out...
then use a 32 or 36mm headset wrench (or honestly if you arent looking to keep anything looking nice, in a pinch a non-bike specific wrench will suffice just remember as a general rule crescent (adjustable) wrenches shouldnt touch bikes ) and remove the top nut
if you mentioned the type of headset i could be more specific, but you basically just break it down by unscrewing everything on the top stack, remove the little notched washer until you are able to pull the fork out through the bottom of the headtube.
this is where you can pull out your bearings and/or bearing retainers (careful you dont lose them if you want to keep the headset. if they are loose they will be resting right on the crown race of the fork and can/will fall)
you should be left with your empty headtube and the cups (cups are the usually silver ends the headset bearings roll inside)
now they make special tools for this, but i've never bought one... get some kind of thin pipe or other tool completely not designed for this purpose and slide it in along the inside of the headtube until it rests on the inner lip of one of the cups. hammer it until the cup pops out. repeat for the other one.
i shouldnt post drunk but if none of this makes any sense, read this, its almost as ghetto but better written with pictures
