Freehub Transplant Sansin Hub
 

I have a Sansin rear tandem hub with a Suntour Accushift II Uniglide Cassette. I want to do a freehub transplant. Got the freehub off, and took the rest of the hub to LBS. The pattern for the freehub doesn't fit Shimano therefore the LBS had no freehub to transplant. Does anybody have an idea what freehub this might be and if it might be available? Also, any ideas for removing a stuck threaded cog on the freehub? It is not coming loose.

Must be a Suntour freehub...? Probably hasn't been made for 15+ years...good luck finding a replacement. Maybe ebay...? But then you'd have to find a matching cassette when the old one wears out...maybe it's time for a new hub.

I can't help but think that you are mixing some terminology here. Uniglide is a Shimano term, and I'm pretty sure you have a freewheel, not a freehub. Did you use a tool with two or four prongs to remove the ratcheting mechanism and the cogs together? Does a thread remain on the hub, on which an English BB lockring fits? If so, you've got a freewheel.

I'm a little scared if you have a freewheel and your LBS doesn't recognize it (go to another LBS!). On the odd chance you do have a Suntour Freehub, yes, you are SOL.

It is likely that only the small cog (or two smallest) are threaded on your unit, and with tandem torque, yes, it/they could be on there pretty MF tight. It's all moot, unless you can get new cogs.

It is a freehub with the last cog used to lock the cassette on. I thought towards the end of manufacturing Suntour made a freehub that was hyperglide compatible.

Suntour Accushift ll cassettes have the thread on outer cog for sure. This does not make it a Uniglide, the spacing is different. Probably the way that they attach to the hub is unique and not compatible with Shimano. I never heard of anybody putting a Hyperglide cassette body on a Suntour hub. I like the idea though. The later hyperglide capable cassettes made by SR/Suntour are for Shimano cassette bodies I'm pretty sure.

Which hub do you have? Could you post a picture ?

I guess I have been using the wrong term, the hub is "uniglide style" with the screw on last cog. Can't get the last cog loose, have tried all kinds of things. Got an idea last night to remove the entire freehub with cassette by removing the 10mm bolt and then anchoring it a board via screws that engage the largest cog. Then I can probably get some real torque and use a cheater bar on the chain whip.
When I get it apart, I'll post a picture. The question I am trying to get an answer to is "does anything but the current freehub body fit the splines on the hub?"

And the answer to your question is NO. I saw Charles Wahl's response to your question on the C&V board and I see that you have indeed got a Suntour freehub and I am very sorry for you. I'm a little surprised because I built and sold custom tandems in the period that your hub must have been made and I was unaware of this hub. Probably a good thing, else I'd have sold some and MY customers would be fighting this same problem now!

Have you worn out the cogs or have you torched the freehub body? I.E., why is it coming apart? Cogs are likely available, but you should probably put yourself on a strict chain replacement regimen, say, 1/16" over 12" because you may not be able to get another set in 10 years.

And yes, setting up some sort of fixture so you can apply some LEVERAGE should get your cogs off.

Ive got a couple of Giant mtbs with suntour stuff on them.

is like everything...campag, shimano and suntour are incompatable

Breaking spokes from time to time requires removing the cassette to lace the spoke back. Getting the cog loose is a real pain. The torque two riders generates tightens the cog up nicely. Going to relace the wheel. So far the hub and freehub are holding up fine. Looking for options other because tandem hubs tend to be pricey.
