headset spacer kludge?
Is there a commonly available tubing that can be used as headset spacers for a 1-1/8" fork? Something like PVC or conduit, that I might find at the local hardware store or home despot? I'm futzing around with handlebar placement and before I go out and buy about 3" of spacers, I'm just wondering if there's a cheaper option out there while I'm doing fitment.

Anything with an internal diameter greater than 1 1/8" (1.125") would work.
Schedule 40 PVC, 1 1/4" nominal has an OD of 1.6" and an ID of 1.138". Should be just the ticket. Your challenge is getting a nice straight cut. Another option is to use a second stem. I do this as a permanent solution for my touring bike. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2138/...54b3dd.jpg?v=0 And still another option is the Sheldon Brown kludge http://www.sheldonbrown.com/handsup.html Scroll down to "Threadless Without Spacers" |
Thanks, all.

http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/pv...ons-d_795.html I have a piece right here and that's what it measures. |
If your just doing it for fitting (non-riding), why not use whatever is approximate? Would remove and fit some actual bike spacer for riding though,

If you buy in bulk you can get an assortment from Niagara Cycle or Cycle Club Sports at a decent price. I stock about 10 to 20 in about 3 - 4 sizes (3mm, 5mm, 10mm and 20mm) in my parts bins.
