If you're front derailleur is a 9/10-speed, do you need a 10-speed chain?
 

I'm currently ajusting the front derailleur (Ultregra) and am running into issues.

I'm wondering if your front derailleur is a 9-speed (but 10-speed compatible), do you need a 10-speed chain? Or will a 9-speed work?

I've used 10s campy FDs with 8 and 9 speed systems and chains with no issues.

You didn't say what cassette you're using. 9 or 10 speed?

I'm using a 9-speed cassette.

The issue i'm facing is when setting the Hi limit on the front derailleur.

I shift to the largest cog and small chainring

The low limit is set just inside the FD, done. No chain rubbing.

I set the cable nice and tight but not too tight.

I then shift to the smallest cog and largest chainring - here's the problem: my Hi screw is completely screwed in and the chain is still rubbing on the outside of the front derailleur.

??

I'll also add that I'm upgrading front and rear from a 9-speed Tiagra 9 model, to Ultegra.
The rear fd works flawlessly.

Is the cage on the dérailleur aligned with the big chain ring? The cage should be parallel to the chain ring.

Maybe SRAM is different but every FD I've owned you screw the H screw out to move the derailleur cage position out.

If you just can't get the FD to swing out far enough with the limit screw adjusted fully you may need more cable tension.

Yep, it is. Some books will tell you line it with the chain, I line it with the large chainring.

I think i'm running out of tension because i just unscrewed the Hi limit screw and the derailleur goes way past the large chainring.

Maybe I'm not following, but it sounds like you don't have an issue then. Just tighten the H screw in as needed.

Or did you really mean than in large front/small cog you are rubbing the inside of your FD?

Yes, you're correct. (sorry, it's been a while i've been at this tonite!)

What was throwing me off was when i was in the large chainring, if i would push the trim because it was rubbing on the outside and the chain would fall to the outside.

Are you supposed to calculate or include trim when setting the outside limit?

Cable tension was the problem. Now it shifts like a charm.
