Hi,

I'm doing a retro build with xtr parts from the late '90s. What are the difference between these the shifters and deraileurs for models m950, m951, m952, m953?

There was a change from 8 to 9 speeds, rapid rise and top/bottom swing and top/bottom pull. So which model designation had which feature?

rd-m950 and rd-m952 are bottom normal (not rapid rise). rd-m951 and rd-m953 are rapid rise.

fd-m950 is top swing, bottom pull, 8 speed. fd-m952 is top swing, bottom pull, 9 speed. I think the fd-m953 is bottom swing, bottom pull, 9 speed.

I don't know about the others.

Are there any difference on the shifters for normal vs rapid rise? For ex. will a m951 shifter work with m952 rear deraileur, will the thumb still pull the rd to a lower (bigger cog) gear and the index trigger drop the rd to a higher (smaller cog) gear?

With rapid rise things are reversed, because pulling the cable moves the der in the opposite direction of a normal der.
