Illuminating my gear indicator

I have a Dahon Speed with a 7 speed cassette and really slick indexed shifting system. I love to ride at night and would like to find some way to illuminate the gear indicator. Any suggestions?

Get one of the very tiny LED strap-on lights used as emergency tail lights and rig it to light up the geat indicator. Here is one from Nashbar:

I have a headlight mounted on my helmet, and shine it at whatever I want to see (computer mainly).

At night, it's even more critical to watch the road, not stare at your computer.

This has some possibilities! I, too, would like to be able to see the numbers on my shifters at night. On my winter bike - a Trek 820 mtb - the stock Shimano front derailleur shifter takes a click-and-a-half to go from small ring to middle ring, but only one click to go from middle to big ring - a click-and-a-half shifts the chain off onto the crankarm. Putting it back on in the dark and cold isn't any fun!

Thanks mom, but I'm a big boy. I ride primarily on a MUP. If there are any cars on there it'll be pretty obvious, and the driver will probably be passed out drunk.

Now shoo away to A&S where people like to tell each other how to ride their bikes.

Well, other than as a toy why? You can feel if you need to increase your engine RPM and know that means shift down or the reverse if you need to slow the engine RPM. What do you care what number gear the transmission is in?

I say this as a "toy guy" , so on that level I do have empathy for lighting the gear selecter, but I'd also understand there's no other valid reason for my wanting to do it.

You need to set your upper limit screw, dude.

I thought a lot of people didn't even bother looking at those indicators. Many LBS's don't even bother installing them (the in-line variety) when assembling bikes even though they come included with the shifters.

^+1 Exactly. If your legs can't tell... uhhhhhh.

Would be just a cool thing, but getting power to it will be tricky, and over-illumination would catapult u to the Land of FRED.

Power is already there in the form of a "coin-cell" battery and they last a loooong time. A red LED will light up what ever you want to see adequately but won't bother your night-vision.

Wouldn't it be simpler to just LEARN to count to SEVEN.

Funny - evidently some people thought he was asking for advice as to whether he should be using the gear indicator. Just so they understand, he wasn't. I hate to speak for him, but I doubt if he gives a rat's patoot whether you think gear indicators are worthwhile or not. He uses his and would like to know how to illuminate it. Sounds like a reasonable question to me, and he's gotten a couple of good suggestions.

Hopefully he has the sense of humor you lack.

If it is adjusted correctly it will never fall off.
