Make a NIMH battery

I tried to do a seach but came up empty. I am just wondering how hard would it be to make a new 8AmpHr 6V NimH aterbottle battery? I'm looking at a summer project to make an 8amphr 6v NiMH battery using the shell of my existing Marwi waterbottle battery. I am lamenting the day that the battery will die and a new one (on sale) is $99 so I'm just starting to think how hard would it be to buy NiMH batteries whosesale and just wire it up in series and splice it to the existing connector.

There is no charge indicator so I don't know if there are any other "electronics" inside the battery itself but if there isn't, then I would think just buying the NiMH batteries if they are in some standard size and then wiring it up myself would be cheaper than buying an OEM one.

You can get cells with metal tabs for this purpose. Any electronics dealer will stock them.
