1st gear derailing

hi ive always loved mountainbiking but im just beggining to get serious with it so im sorry if i dont know the names of certain things anyway my problem is that i have a 21 speed raleigh bike (pardon my spelling) and whenever i switch to gear 1 on the 3 gears next to the pedals then my chain falls of and occaisionally my ....i dont know the name ****! that doesnt matter but anyway i would like some help with the gear problem and if you need anymore information before you can help then just ask

The front derailleur has two screws on it... one controls how far in towards the frame the derailleur can travel, the other controls how far the FD can travel in the other direction. See this page (https://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=75) for instructions on finding which screw does which.

Basically, it sounds like the derailleur is traveling too far in one direction and it's pushing the chain clear off the last chainring.

Yeah, sounds like your derailleur is moving too far inward.

Just make sure you go slowly and bit-by-bit when adjusting your FD.

I remember when I was at the same stage as you, I had a shot at adjusting it, took me over an hour to get it right again..
