SR-Semi-pro fricton to index shifting

need some help!

I have an '80's SR semi-pro, has full Suntour/SR everything...I'm tired of the friction shifters and want to go to index shifting. I bought a set of Suntour GPX shifters/front & rear derailluers to do the upgrade. Now I hearing I need to upgrade the cassette to be compatible as well? I want to keep it a six speed...what the best solution? PowerFlo or ??? the hubs are Suntour sealed bearing units.

Was gpx a 6 speed group? Their center to center spacing differed btwn 6 and 7. I think that should be 7 speed, but really I'm only guessing. If so any suntour 7 speed freewheel or cassette- whichever it is- should work... I think. I think the spacing became standardized w/ 7 and 8.

the shifters are 6 & 7 speed index compatiable as well as friction. Do I have to have a indexing cassette that has the special teeth specifically for indexing?

It's not the teeth, it's the spacing between the cogs. I'd ask in the classics area, more working knowledge in there of suntour indexing probably. Personally it confuses me.

For cog spacing, see-

The stuff you have should index with any Suntour 6-speed freewheel except an ultra-6 spaced one. If your FW is ultra-6 spacing, the shifters may index OK on 7-speed setting (just ignore the extra click).

Unless it's accushift stuff, right?

So is suntour's freewheel spacing before they had indexing the same spacing as after in general exceot when it comes to certain accushift systems?

See I had an xcd6000 drivetrain once, 6 speed indexed, and it only took a 6 speed accushift freewheel which was different than a standard 6 freewheel.

So i just gave up...went to a shop had them install and adjust...i works just fine. Sometimes to much information from to many sources gets screwy...when in doubt, trying it out.
