Cantilever problems

My cousin has a Specialized Hard Rock MTB, and he's having issues with his center pull cantilever brakes. They all have a sealed return spring with tension adjustment and the case that seals the spring was made of plastic and broke. Now, my question; if I buy him new brakes, will the case be made of plastic, or do new brakes use metal.

I was looking at the Shimano R550 for $33 and want to know if they use cheap plastic or any kind of metal.

I don't think anyone is still making canti brakes with plastic spring housings anymore for the very reason you are talking about. Even the cheap Tektro canti brakes we sell at our shop now are all alloy.
